──── WASTE MANAGEMENT
Goal: reduce per capita waste production and increase the percentage of monomaterial (paper and plastic) sent for recycling.
Actions taken:
- Separate collection in the Expo area and along the race route thanks to the collaboration with AMA Roma
- Activation of teams of volunteers to facilitate separate waste collection along the route thanks to collaboration with Plasticfree
- Collaboration with Circularity for reporting on the quantities of waste collected and the environmental impact in terms ofCO2 eq.
Highlights 2024:
- 1,08 kg of waste per participant, -40% compared to 2023!
- + 3.800 kg of plastic sent for recycling, +4% compared to 2023!
- + 4.970 kg of paper sent for recycling, +12% compared to 2023!
- 7,05 tCO2 saved thanks to recyling
Food surpluses
Goal: prevent food waste upstream and progressively reduce the amount of surplus food per participant.
Actions taken:
- Collaboration with Banco Alimentare Roma for the collection and donation of food surpluses starting from the 2021 edition. Thanks to the involvement of Banco Alimentare, the Marathon continues its commitment to reducing waste: all foodstuffs (food, drinks and snacks) left over at the 18 refreshment points set up along the route are recovered by the non-profit charitable organizations of the Banco network, to be virtuously used by them to provide food assistance to the most needy.
- Quantification of food surpluses and measurement of CO2 eq. saved thanks to the Sustainability partner Circularity, an innovative start-up and benefit company dedicated to the circular economy and the integration of sustainability in all phases of the event.
