Planting project with Zero CO2

Starting with the 2021 edition, the Marathon is supporting a tree-planting project with its partner Zero CO2. Thanks to the commitment of the Marathon and the involvement of runners, more than 9,000 trees have been planted since the 2021 edition.

Highlights

+ 3.257 new trees planted in 2023

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Goal: reduce per capita waste production and increase the percentage of monomaterial (paper and plastic) sent for recycling.

Actions taken:

Separate collection in the Expo area and along the race route thanks to the collaboration with AMA Roma Activation of teams of volunteers to facilitate separate waste collection along the route thanks to collaboration with Plasticfree Collaboration with Circularity for reporting on the quantities of waste collected and the environmental impact in terms ofCO2 eq. Highlights 2024:

1,08 kg of waste per participant, -40% compared to 2023! + 3.800 kg of plastic sent for recycling, +4% compared to 2023! + 4.970 kg of paper sent for recycling, +12% compared to 2023! 7,05 tCO2 saved thanks to recyling Food surpluses

Goal: prevent food waste upstream and progressively reduce the amount of surplus food per participant.

Actions taken:

Collaboration with Banco Alimentare Roma for the collection and donation of food surpluses starting from the 2021 edition. Thanks to the involvement of Banco Alimentare, the Marathon continues its commitment to reducing waste: all foodstuffs (food, drinks and snacks) left over at the 18 refreshment points set up along the route are recovered by the non-profit charitable organizations of the Banco network, to be virtuously used by them to provide food assistance to the most needy. Quantification of food surpluses and measurement of CO2 eq. saved thanks to the Sustainability partner Circularity, an innovative start-up and benefit company dedicated to the circular economy and the integration of sustainability in all phases of the event.

Sustainable mobility

Goal: reach a fleet of event vehicles consisting mainly of hybrid or electric vehicles.

Actions taken:
Partnership with Honda Partnership with Cooltra
Goals: increase the amount of recycled material in the products distributed during the event and reduce the amount of single-use plastic in the food outlets.

Actions taken:

Run Rome The Marathon promotes and choose suppliers with ecological certifications and products containing recycled material wherever possible. Digitization of communication material in such a way as to reduce the need for printing and consequently the production of waste. Use of recycled TNT on the racecourse. Use of water tanks at some of the 18 refreshment points with the support of biodegradable cups. This reduces the use of plastic water bottles.
Goal: progressively reduce emissions generated at all stages of the event to achieve Carbon Neutrality in future editions.

Actions taken:

Thanks to the collaboration with the Sustainability partner Circularity, the Marathon has embarked, starting with the 2021 edition, on a measurement path aimed at estimating – with a view to transparency and continuous improvement – the carbon footprint of the event’s most impactful activities, going step by step to activate virtuous sustainability and Circular Economy initiatives that enable the reduction of the measured emissions. In order to calculate the carbon footprint of a complex event such as the Run Rome The Marathon, we use the international methodology “GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard“, and the methodological guidelines for the sports sector, in particular the “Carbon footprint methodology for the olympic games”, drawn up in 2018 by the International Olympic Committee for estimating the carbon footprint of the Olympic games. ARRTM is committed to estimate the pre-event carbon footprint with the aim of defining the emission reduction plan. Post-event, based on the actual calculated figure, we update the emission reduction plan with a view to improvement for subsequent editions
Carbon footprint: The 2024 edition of the Marathon generated a total of 8,285 t CO2eq.

The Run Rome the Marathon 2022 has obtained ISO 20121 certification for the design, sustainable delivery and reporting of the event, through the certifying body RINA. An important path that saw the active involvement of the entire Organization, accompanied in the certification process by Sustainability partner Circularity.

The ISO 20121 allows the organizations involved to have shared and unified benchmarks in order to prevent, mitigate and offset the possible negative effects caused by events on the environment and local communities whilst enhancing the positive ones.

Rome runs towards the SDGs

Running is like sustainable living: it requires passion, tenacity and above all constancy! Those who run know that everything depends on the impact with the ground, and to go fast you have to be light on your feet. This is how the Rome Marathon wants to be: light in impact, reaching the finish line fast.A long-term roadmap launched in 2021 to respond effectively and proactively to the challenges to be faced for a more sustainable marathon, promoted by Infront Italy, Corriere dello Sport – Stadio, Italia Marathon Club and Atielle in collaboration with our Sustainability Partner Circularity – an innovative start-up and benefit company operating in the circular economy. Our goal is to make Run Rome The Marathon an example of sustainable management, integrating environmental and social sustainability through concrete and measurable initiatives. We aim to engage and inspire stakeholders and partners, fostering collaboration that allows us to reach the same goal together!

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPEMENT GOALS (SDGs)

On 25th of September 2015 the General Assembly of United Nations adopted the Agenda 2030 for the Sustainable Development, consisting of 17 goals named Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 169 targets and an action plan for people, planet and prosperity. This intent declaration represents the strategy designed by the Assembly to address global challenges by 2030, recognizing the unsustainability of the current development model and declaring the strong link between man and the planet. Indeed, it overcomes the idea that sustainability is a mere environmental issue, instead preferring a vision that integrates the different dimensions of development: economics, environment, society and institutions. The Marathon will support Italy and the world in the achievement of some of these Sustainable Development Goal
